Thomas Nast

Thomas Nast invented the Tamany Hall tiger, and was the first to use an elephant for the Republican party (1874) and the Democratic donkey. Nast was a satirist/political cartoonist who worked mostly for Harper’s Weekly. Nast ran a non-stop attack on Boss Tweed and Tamany Hall political machine. He showed the Tamany tiger devouring liberty; or an Irishman chained to a post of liquor who’s put to work on “boodle” projects and compelled to stuff the ballot box on election day. After Grant was elected president over the democrats (and renegade Liberal Republican Horace Greeley), Mark Twain said that Nast was responsible more than any other man.
